Great Lakes Surf Shop
Great Lakes Surf is a unique, outdoor recreation shop that recently opened in St. Clair Shores. Owners, Brian LeFeve and Melanie Rucinksi, say that most people are shocked to hear there is a surf shop in Michigan since most assume there’s no surf on the Great Lakes! Brian and Melanie strongly disagree, stating that these lakes have sunk some pretty big ships and can be quite intimidating even to the seasoned surfer. The wind-driven waves here in Michigan can get pretty gnarly, presenting perfect conditions for extreme water sports. However, the still calm waters of the state’s rivers and inland lakes are perfect for other board sports offered by Great Lakes Surf!
After many years of studying places, products, procedures, cool people and all that is exhilarating, they decided to share and help educate like-minded people on these incredible board sports. Located on the corner of Nine Mile and Mack, Great Lakes Surf is an expansion of an existing company, Great Lakes Kiteboarding, which was the first kiteboarding school in Michigan! GLK School has been in business for over ten years, and Brian, the main instructor, has been riding the Great Lakes for twenty years and teaching for fifteen! Both Brian and Melanie pride themselves on providing quality lessons, rentals and gear for kiteboarding, stand up paddle boarding, skating, snowboarding, and snow kiting.
Whatever your board sport is, Great Lakes Surf Shop has the knowledge and experience to get you on the right equipment, the right way. They sell kiteboarding gear, stand up paddle boards, skateboards/land paddling/long boards, rash guards, wet suits, and some trendy apparel featuring the Great Lakes Surf Shop logo!
Great Lakes Surf Shop is one of the first to sell, rent, and teach stand up paddle boarding, the fastest growing water sport in the world! Michigan’s Great Lakes are the perfect place to learn and enjoy this sport because of the areas of flat calm water and yes, even waves for excellent surfing. Paddleboarding is easy, it’s fun and anyone can do it. There are so many ways to enjoy this sport, so to get someone started off, they offer lessons, rentals, fitness classes and an incredible selection of equipment. Rentals include a quick lesson (if needed) and they will bring the board to your location or you can come to them and they’ll find the closest and best spot for you to paddle. For a more formal lesson, they would be happy to take you out and share detailed paddling techniques that are vital for safety and efficiency. They have a wide variety of stand up paddle boards available to rent: $25.00 per hour (or $20 per hour for 2+ boards) or $75.00 per day (or $65.00 per for 2+ boards)!
Great Lakes Surf Shop will be offering a yoga class this summer, a unique form of yoga –done on paddle boards! The first class will be on June 26, 2012 from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. They plan to hold the class on shores of Walter and Mary Burke Park in downtown New Baltimore. Stand up paddle boards will be able to rent for a small fee; call 586-359-6951 for more information.
