Macomb County Business Development Team nets results

In 2013, clients of the Macomb County Home in Macomb Business Retention Program invested more than $90 million in new equipment and space while retaining 1,626 jobs and creating 696 new ones.  Attraction successes include new investments of nearly $7 million and the creation of 295 jobs.

Housed within the Department of Planning & Economic Development, Macomb County’s staff of business development professionals work with companies of all sizes to help them thrive and grow within the county.

“Our objective is to connect employers with the resources they need to grow,” said Stephen N. Cassin, executive director of the department.  “We maintain solid relationships with a network of economic development agencies to keep current with available tools for solving the challenges that businesses face.”
Highlighted retention projects of the year include:

  • Triumph Gear Systems of Macomb Township expanded their 88,000-square-foot facility by 60,000-square feet making room for new projects and 60 new employees.  This world-class manufacturer provides complex gear assemblies, detail gears and an array of components for the aerospace industry.  Overall, they invested more than $15 million to expand, add new machinery and train their workforce to meet increasing demand for their products.
  • Bosco’s Pizza Co. of Warren invested nearly $5 million in new equipment to expand their product line and added 13 individuals to their payroll.  Originally a supplier of stuffed breadsticks and pizza for school lunch programs, their products have become so popular that they are now widely sold in grocery stores across the United States.
  • Martinrea International Inc. of Warren invested more than $8.4 million to purchase robotic welding cells to increase cost effectiveness of their operations.  With locations across the globe, this Tier One supplier to the automotive industry specializes in steel and aluminum metal parts, assemblies and modules as well as fluid management systems.  The expansion created 75 new jobs.

Business attraction successes include:

  • JVIS established its headquarters in Sterling Heights.  An engineering design and tool services company, they offer manufacturing and supply chain management.  With clients in six countries, their objective is to help increase production capabilities while reducing time-to-market.  They are expected to create 75 high-tech jobs.
  • Serra Spring & Manufacturing moved its headquarters to Sterling Heights.  A custom spring manufacturer, they serve a variety of industries including automotive, heavy equipment, furniture, medical devices, electronics, defense, aerospace and other industrial segments.
