Wyle opens Sustainment Engineering Facility in Sterling Heights, MI
Department staff joined nearly 250 others to celebrate the opening of the new Sustainment Engineering Facility established by Wyle in Sterling Heights, Michigan.
Based in El Segundo, California, Wyle is a privately owned, multi-disciplined engineering and technical services company that serves the aerospace and defense industries. Founded in 1949, it employs approximately 4,600 at 50 offices nationwide.
Its highly skilled and experienced engineers, specialists and technicians contribute to a wide variety of projects such as the Joint Strike Fighter, F/A-18 and the International Space Station. Clients include the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and NASA.
This 4,300 square-foot suite of offices opened at the Defense Corridor Center for Collaboration and Synergy (DC3S) with an initial ten employees. DC3S, a nonprofit public-private partnership, is focused on fostering creative Research and Development (R&D) and STEM education. The site was selected for its proximity to the Detroit Arsenal in nearby Warren. They will offer engineering and logistical support for customers at the:
U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command
Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) Office
Program Executive Office Command Support & Combat Service Support, Project Manager Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (PM MRAPP) Joint Project Office.
“Wyle works with the Army in multiple capacities at several locations across the country and overseas,” said Peter Green, president of Wyle’s Aerospace division, who will oversee the new facility’s operations. “We’re very excited to get to be part of this community and have the opportunity to partner with TACOM and TARDEC in carrying out their important missions to support the warfighter.”
The ribbon cutting was held on May 20. County Executive Mark A. Hackel joined other speakers in congratulating Wyle on making Macomb its home.
With the company having located in Sterling Heights, Wyle becomes the Department of Planning and Economic Development’s latest business attraction success. Upon first meeting Wyle representatives at an AUSA Conference in Florida, and learning of the company’s interest in establishing a presence in Southeast Michigan, the department began working with them to identify suitable facilities in the Macomb County Defense Corridor. The department compiled a list of buildings that matched Wyle’s required specifications, and coordinated with appropriate real estate brokers to tour select properties. After several weeks of deliberation, the company made its decision to locate their Sustainment Engineering Center at the DC3S.

The event also featured a demonstration of Rave Computer’s new “Rave CAVE.”
A Cave Automatic Virtual Environment, or CAVE, is a room where projectors are directed toward every wall forming a virtual reality cube. Users wear special glasses to see 3D graphics.
A CAVE user's movements are tracked by the sensors and the video adjusts accordingly. Computers control both this aspect of the CAVE and the audio aspect. There are multiple speakers placed at multiple angles in the CAVE, providing 3D sound to complement the 3D video.
Local to Metro Detroit and open for public use, the CAVE will be available to all educational entities for STEM-related activities as well as industries that have a consistent need for this environment on a daily or weekly basis.
When asked why he decided to become a founding sponsor, Rick Darter, President and CEO of Rave Computer replied, “This is an excellent opportunity for Rave to support Modeling and Simulation here in Metro Detroit.” Darter continues, “Optimizing systems to meet graphically intense performance requirements is what we’ve done for years; it is our forte. Powering the new CAVE environment enables Rave to remain aligned with this growing technology landscape.”
Rave, located adjacent to DC3S, is a technology consultant and computer manufacturer providing Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and custom engineered solutions optimized to specific customer requirements.
