eMacomb - Upcoming Events, Summer 2015
MFG Day is Friday, October 2 (and we need you!)
Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) is a national campaign designed to increase awareness about the important role of manufacturing in our economy while dispelling a misperception that jobs in the industry are dirty, dangerous and low paying. The ultimate goal is to close the skilled labor gap by connecting the next generation of employees – and their influencers – to today’s manufacturing environment.
We hope to accomplish this by providing opportunities for students from all 28 of Macomb County's public high schools to tour area manufacturers on October 2. Macomb County is collaborating with the Macomb Intermediate School District to coordinate the county’s third celebration of this national event.
On Friday, October 2, high school students from across Macomb County will get on buses to visit area manufacturers to meet people who make things and see the industry in action. We are currently looking for manufacturing companies to welcome groups of chaperoned students. Our intent is for them to see the "product life cycle" in action as they meet the people involved in the important work of making things.
The department is currently seeking manufacturers to get involved by:
- Allowing a group of approximately 30 students to provide a tour lasting 60-90 minutes
- Prepare a company overview to share with students
- Recruit employees to talk about their jobs and the training they received
A planning committee made up of executives from area plants and officials from school districts and economic development agencies have been working since last year to coordinate this year’s event. The goal is for 2,000 students to have an opportunity to participate. A grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation will help to offset some of the costs.
Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development is currently developing a website (www.ManufactureMyFuture.com) to provide additional information for students, their families and school guidance counselors about the industry.
Help in planning the tour is provided. As an example, please see the presentation prepared by Fori Automation from last year. As you can see, the tour should describe how the company impacts product life cycle. It is also important that students – divided into smaller, more manageable groups – have a chance to interact with employees.
If you are interested in getting involved, please complete this quick questionnaire: Apply to be a host facility.
