Macomb County seeks hosts for Manufacturing Day 2016
Macomb County is revving up to organize another successful Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) and seeks area manufacturers to offer tours for small groups of students.
MFG Day is a national campaign designed to create greater awareness about the importance of the manufacturing industry. Nowhere is it greater than right here in Macomb County. Last year, the county held one of the largest MFG Day events in the country, and this year, it is going to be even bigger.
The Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development is working with the Macomb Intermediate School District and a dedicated planning committee to organize a countywide celebration of MFG Day on Friday, Oct. 7.
The goal is to provide an opportunity for 2,100 students to visit area plants. This provides an excellent opportunity to expose the next generation of our workforce to the interesting and well-paying careers provided by the industry. Plants that specialize in advanced manufacturing with good workforce development programs in place are needed to demonstrate what it might be like to work in the industry someday.
Overall, evaluations from last year proved the event is a great way to get students thinking about a future in the industry. Prior to their visit, 42 percent of participants said they had not considered a job in manufacturing. After, 91 percent said they would definitely or possibly consider a career in the field.
To get involved, local manufacturers should contact Maria Zardis at email@example.com before Friday, Sept. 2 to become a host site. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. More information is at MacombBusiness.com/MFGDay.
