Global Trade Mission returns to MISD
Since 1998, the Global Trade Mission experience has provided more than 2,000 area high school students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s dynamic world economy. GTM is an intensive, three-day, hands-on virtual learning experience that simulates an international trade mission. Students will be placed into 4-person teams with others from across the region to solve a marketing problem. Macomb County Planning and Economic Development staff will participate as experts and business coaches.
Through this extraordinary opportunity, students learn about exciting careers in international business and in the high-tech industries and emerging technologies with the most promising growth potential overseas. These include: cleantech and renewable energy; defense and homeland security; IT and cybersecurity; life sciences and medical devices; and robotics and automation.
Working in cross-district, cross-functional teams, with dedicated business experts and volunteer business coaches to guide them along the way, students are presented with real-world case studies. They are charged with determining how to best market and sell a particular U.S. company’s product, service or technology overseas based on the unique characteristics of doing business in a specific region. Working together, teams will develop a business pitch that is presented to a panel of “investors,” with one team in each category emerging with the winning proposal.
The overall purpose of GTM is to train youth to be adept at problem solving. Local companies can draw on these skills in the future to enhance Michigan’s overall global competitiveness. GTM also aims to stimulate a spirit of entrepreneurialism in our region and the creation of higher-value-added jobs, while ensuring that we remain at the forefront of innovation.
