Wayne State University commits to Macomb County

College students in Macomb County have a new educational opportunity available in Warren at the Wayne State University Advanced Technology Education Center (ATEC).  Wayne State’s redevelopment of a vacant site, investment in education and partnership with Macomb Community College (MCC) all spell great news for Macomb County.

After only a year of construction, ATEC celebrated its grand opening last month. Situated on a 3.5-acre site that was formerly a Farmer Jack grocery store, the 40,000-square-foot facility has teaching and classroom space for 900 students.  The renovated facility is located at 14601 East 12 Mile Road, adjacent to MCC’s South Campus.  Wayne State has estimated the cost of the project to be $12 million.

With two locations already in Clinton Township (Wayne State University Macomb Education Center and University Center-Macomb), ATEC marks the latest Wayne State expansion into Macomb County.  Earlier this year, a crosswalk and traffic light were installed across 12 Mile Road to connect ATEC and MCC’s South Campus, linking the schools both physically and symbolically.

“We are proud of our longstanding partnership with Macomb Community College, and are confident that by opening this new state-of-the-art classroom facility across from South Campus, we will help more students from Macomb County succeed academically and in the workforce,” said Associate Vice President Ahmad Ezzeddine.

Programming available at ATEC coincides with Macomb County’s fastest growing industries of manufacturing, transportation and defense.  Macomb County students can attain four-year degrees in engineering, computer science, business and advanced manufacturing, enabling them to become part of the skilled workforce that is currently in high demand by local employers.  Students began classes at the new facility this past September.
