Macomb County to host “How-To Hire Veterans” Conference

Full-day event will educate, inspire and motivate area companies to launch veteran hiring programs

According to the Michigan Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives, the unemployment rate for military veterans is higher in Michigan than national average.  It is estimated that 7.9 percent of veterans in Michigan are unemployed compared to 7 percent throughout the country.

In addition, a 2012 Prudential survey found that 60 percent of recently discharged veterans named “finding a job” as their greatest challenge for transitioning to civilian life.

Recognizing that we can do better for the men and women who voluntarily defended our nation, combined with an expressed need by area employers to expand their workforces, Macomb County will host a series of events designed especially for area companies in hiring mode.

The Michigan Values Veterans Conference will offer information and resources for employers who wish to strengthen or establish a dedicated veteran hiring program. The day-long event will:

Introduce participants to leaders from local companies that already have strong programs in place.
Provide resources for matching military work experience with current hiring needs
Connect HR personnel with programs that serve ready, willing and able veteran job seekers.
Provide an overview of a variety of federal, state and local programs that assist in training veterans for new jobs and/or help to offset payroll expenses.

“We are on a mission to integrate Michigan’s workforce with highly skilled and able veterans,” said County Executive Mark A. Hackel. “This is an important component to both the success of our residents and our economy as well.”

Macomb County is partnering with TMG, Inc. to host the program.  TMG manages the successful Virginia Values Veterans program and has a great deal of experience in helping companies learn how to hire and retain veterans.

The Michigan Values Vets Conference will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 12 at Macomb Community College-South Campus. Funded by a grant awarded to the department by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, this is a free event.  All Michigan businesses with a current or foreseeable need to hire are strongly encouraged to attend.  A second event is also being coordinated for November 1 in Kalamazoo.
